- With Igor CREVITS, Computer science researcher in the Laboratoire d’Automatique, de Mécanique et d’Informatique Industrielles et Humaines (LAMIH) at the Université de Valenciennes et du Hainaut-Cambrésis (UVHC, France), I am working on the AMANDA (Automation & MAN-machine Delegation of Action) project.
AMANDA is a joint research and development project between the LAMIH and the French civil aviation authority (Sous-Direction Etude et Recherche de la Direction Générale de l’Aviation Civile, contract No. LAMIH/SDER/06C01). My contribution to AMANDA (version 3) is to formalise air traffic controllers’ personal constructs into a working model for development. The model is used to create a media-based decision making aid so that air traffic controllers can have a greater sense of control of what they do.
At the core of my approach is the idea of allowing controllers feel they are in control of a situation that is, by its very nature, highly stressful. This sense of control in working with others, and in many ways for others, is a central pivot of my understanding of work-based empowerment.
- In collaboration with the “staff and student development unit” of the Université de Valenciennes et du Hainaut-Cambrésis (UVHC, France), my brief is to access the relevance of the Learning Management System, MOODLE, that has been made available at the University. The aim is to identify current usage and needs in blended and online learning activities at the University.
The principal aim, from a research point of view, is to understand how users make sense of what they interact with on the computer screen and what they put online.
- In an inter-laboratory venture at the UVHC we have set up a research project called Visions Numériques (Digital Visions). Its aim is to study the phenomena of emotional contagion when a group of people view an audio-visual document. To to this we measure the physiological responses linked to viewers' emotional responses. My role is to identify what feelings viewers attribute to these emotion responses. The concept of “feeling”, used in this context, is one that is closely associated to a person's sensemaking process.
- With the financial backing from the French Nord-Pas de Calais Regional authority, the different universities in the Region developed a joint Learning Management Platform, called Passeport Numérique (Digital Passport). The principal aim was to encourage adult returnees to university to consolidate their basic academic skills (2004-2008). My role was to develop learning modules for English as a Foreign Language. One of the educational objectives was to empower French adults in their use of English as a communication tool, and to have a greater sense of intercultural “literacy”.
- In partnership with Igor CREVITS, Computer science researcher (LAMIH, UVHC, France) we designed and set up DIGOR (Dispositif Informatif de Guidage Opportun et Régulateur, 2002-2008). The objective was to provide language educators with a decision-making tool when conducting diagnostic interviews. The system is based on a specially designed database that progressively presents on a computer screen, learner scores taken from a multiple-choice diagnostic test that learners had previously filled in. The tool was used to facilitate the interchange between the learner and the educator.
The system is used in the learning of French as a foreign language, in partnership with Phillipe USEILLE (French educator and researcher in information and communication science), and English as a foreign language in the continuing education unit of UVHC.
The research aim was to encourage empowerment in helping learners make sense of what their test scores mean for future (remedial) action and language pratice.
